The iPad is Not A Kindle Killer; Blame the Display

The iPad, the much-anticipated Apple tablet computer announced today, is not going to revolutionize the display industry. It doesn’t sport a bright OLED display; it isn’t wearing the latest Pixel Qi technology that combines normal transmissive LCD technology with a black-and-white reflective version for easy viewing in bright sunlight.

The iPad simply uses a liquid crystal display backlit with light emitting diodes, the kind of display you see today… Continue

What's in it for you, really: Twitter and Maslow's hierarchy of needs

In discussing and strategizing about the business use of Twitter and other social media platforms, it's essential to get to the core of why exactly a business would/should engage. Whether the goal is set as listening and lurking, contributing new content, or actively seeking contacts and participating in discussions, the decision must be done. (And revised too, if need… Continue

Gyno-Binary Post

Even if you are not particularly lit up by my writing - this post attracted some very intersting comment. It would be interesting to hear a different section of the web's pov too.

"When it comes to matters of gender, I’m usually a dullard at the best of times. I’m mildly intimidated by feminists and mildly bored by misogynists. I’m broadly aware of the issues.

I've followed the waves of social media through crisis reporting for a few years now. Although the percentage of consumers is stll small in comparison with the mainstream population, the narrow end of the scale is proving to be vital when it comes to communicating the messages that make our… Continue

A call for research

This is the Center for Internet Research, but I see very little in the way of actual research proposals. Is there an interest here in doing research? I have been involved in on line communication before the web existed and when the Internet was limited to academic institutions connected to the Department of Defense and people complained when the Net was invaded by commercial enterprises.

But that is the past. The internet has evolved enough to allow the existence of a site like this,… Continue

Use of Social Media by the Judicial Branch

What with the state's budget meltdown I didn't get to go to this year's Court Technology conference, but because of new technologies I was able to read and watch what went on, including that the keynote speaker made the case for the use of social media like Twitter, blogs and Facebook by the courts.

One of the democratizing consequences of the web is that even without funds to pay for going and staying at such gatherings one can hear CTC 2009 Keynoter, NPR Justice Correspondent Ari… Continue
