Supercomputing or not?

While everyone else is deep in 2.0 the Supercomputing is going on. Here is what we have put together for a conference. But I have limited attendance for this day. If you have friends who are in the Portland area I need your help.

The National Academy of Sciences has had hearings on STEM, on Science Learning and , gaming, simulations in education. A group of us, mostly EOT, NCWIT and others crafted a conference to further that message. This is a group of us who have worked together… Continue

Education Reform: Wrong Diagnosis, So Wrong Cure

My guest column in the Washington Post, 11-04-09]

Education Reform: Wrong Diagnosis, So Wrong Cure

When "Race to the Top" fails, as it will, the main reason won’t be any of those currently being advanced by the corporate interests and politicians now running the education show. It won’t fail because of lack of academic rigor, poor teaching, weak administrators, too-short school year, union resistance, differing state standards, insufficient performance incentives, sorry… Continue

Cloud Computing and all of that Jazz ( Is Education being thought of?)

I love clouds.. my first images of them are from the Charlie Brown cartoons.. I think Lucy is lying on her back in a field talking about the shapes of the cloud.. Anyway , it is what I think of first when one says clouds. Then having taken lots and lots of

trips, I think of looking at clouds out of an airplane window. Or maybe thinking of storm clouds as they form and go dark. But clouds for computing? And what's that song... fragments of it float through my mind..

There is a… Continue

Wannabe U: Inside the Corporate University

In most debates over its future, the university is represented—by both its critics and its champions—as a secular temple for learning, a sacred space freed from the more mundane concerns that trouble other institutions. But lately this lofty image looks increasingly tarnished, especially with regard to public research universities. There, a new class of administrative professionals has been busy working to make colleges as much like businesses as possible. In…

Not only does innovation drive the economy, says Judy Estrin, CEO of JLABS, but it influences the very quality of our day-to-day life, and it is the only way to meet all of our national and global challenges. Stuck in the Shallow End, or Run out of Town, Run over by Negligence, Omission , lack of Digital Equity or Understanding?

I admit that I am an advocate for educational change. I will never be rich except in experiences. My advocacy and direct discussion make many enemies for me. For ten years I have been working with HPC, ie. learning about Supercomputing. I have been working to learn. It has been a pleasure. Recently, I ran into a snag...or got run over. You decide.

Teachers.. Leave No Teacher Behind in Professional Development and Experiential Training

I have lots of educator friends. Philosophers, visionaries and geniuses who are speakers and who talk about education and educators.

Teachers as Victims? Some Stuck in the Shallow End,

Education, Race and Computing

Many of the visionaries are not so kind to the people who stand in classrooms. I know they don't know much about the reality of teaching in various situations. I have been able to bring many to understand what it is really like to be a teacher, the… Continue
